Murron MacClannough

Murron MacClannough is the wife and lover of the greatest Scottish patriot Sir William Wallace as potraited in the movie Braveheart. However as history is written, the real name of this lady is known to be Marion Braidfute; a beautiful young lass from Lanark.

The potrayal of the character in Braveheart is subjected to many historical inaccuracies. According to the plot, William and Murron lived in the same village and builds up a friendship during their childhood after the death of William's father. William leaves home afterwards only to return back as a bachelor and instantly fall in love with Murron. They engage in a secret marriage in fear of prima noctes, but Murron ends up being killed by the hands of an English Magistrate. William seeks revenge by killing an entire English garrison including the Magistrate, which is where the Scottish uprising made its begining. However, according to Scottish history William met his future wife several years after the uprising had begun.

In the movie, the character of Murron MacClannough is played by the British actress Catherine McCormack and the childhood scenes by Mhairi Calvey.
